Florida offers endless explorations by bike, from eclectic beach towns filled with historical treasures to miles of trails in the heart of pristine nature. Whether you want to set your own course or share the journey with others, the options are as unlimited as your imagination. Let’s take a zip through some of the exciting possibilities, shall we?
J.R. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge
Located on the north side of Sanibel Island, this protected sanctuary is home to more than 220 species of birds. For an entry fee of just $1 per biker, you can ride along a one-way loop (choose between four or eight miles) during the morning’s low tide and see a variety of birds feeding on the mud flats.
Plan your excursion for December through March and you’ll also see a wealth of migratory birds. If you don’t want to bring your own bike, the nearby Tarpon Bay Explorers provides rentals. Visit on Saturday through Thursday – every Friday the birds get the whole place to themselves!
East Coast Historic Treasures
Enjoy this biking getaway filled with spectacular views of the Atlantic and the fascinating cultural offerings of St. Augustine and Amelia Island, from exploring ancient forts to paddling the marshes of the Timucuan Ecological Preserve. VBT offers a six-day tour with an easy daily riding schedule of two to four hours and bikes are included.
While more expensive than some bike tour packages, you’re sure to love accommodations such as the award-winning Williams House B&B, an 1856 antebellum mansion in the Historic District of Fernandina Beach. Learn more about this new cycling sojourn from VBT.
Bike Florida’s Annual Surf & Turf

You can also tailor the trip for your preferred activity level, with 7-day, 5-day, 2-day, and 1-day ride options. Bike Florida is a nonprofit organization that benefits the Florida Traffic and Bicycle Safety Education Program, so you’re not only exercising and having fun, you’re also supporting a good cause.
