Jaime Brenkus Quick Fit Tips: How to Monitor Your Heart Rate

Evergreen Wellness® Fitness Coach Jaime Brenkus tells how to monitor your heart rate while exercising.

Now sometimes it’s very confusing to try and take your heart rate during exercise. You can get your pulse by going to the radial, by your thumb here. We’re taking it on the Carotid artery by your throat.

Now take it with two fingers. Not your thumb. Your thumb has a pulse. Count your pulse for 15 seconds, then multiply that number by 4. So for instance, if you have a 25 count, then your heart rate would be 100.

But I have a simpler way to gauge your exertion level. Take the talk test. Now if you’re gasping for air, you’re working way too hard. Slow it down. Now on the other hand, if you can recite the Gettysburg Address without breathing hard, well, you need to pick up the pace.

However, if you can hold a conversation, that’s just right. You’re most likely in your target zone you need to be in. Now keep up the steady state of aerobics and have fun getting fit.
